Ask Buffy

Dear Buffy,

I am on the teamworkonline website often searching for jobs in the sports industry. This is what I am passionate about, want to do and know I am capable of performing at a high level but it is seemingly impossible and very frustrating to find a job. I just graduated college and I have a lot of internship experience outside the sports industry and I was active in college and performed well academically. It seems like no teams or leagues feel I am qualified for a full-time position. I am willing to do internships to gain the experience required of a full time position but it seems every internship requires you to receive academic credit and since I am no longer a student I feel permanently stuck in the middle and very lost and upset over how I can ever break into the sports industry. Do you have any advice on what steps I could take? Thanks very much in advance for your time.

Sincerely,

Young Grad

Dear Young Grad,

The most prevalent job to get in sports is a ticket sales job. To get that job you should be a college graduate, preferably majoring in sports marketing and have had some sales experience. Most organizations don't want to take graduates as interns, so I would focus on a full time job. If you need to get sales experience, see whether you could work for a retail store or sell Vector knives door to door. You might consider graduate school in sports administration if you really want to get in and your degree and internships aren't in sports.
