Job Purpose | The Grounds Supervisor plans, coordinates, supervises, assigns and assists with the work of Grounds staff. Oversees and tracks all phases of work orders and their costs. Manages material orders and shop stock.
Responsible for managing the day-to-day grounds maintenance at Patriot’s Point Sporting Complex, Tennis Center and Sailing Center. Supervises and coordinates the work of the grounds crew and any contracted work. Manages all general operations pertaining to the maintenance of all fields in accordance with all appropriate guidelines. This responsibility includes but is not limited to practices, league competition, special events, game field marking, deferred and required maintenance to the grounds, irrigation systems, fences and landscape. Daily trash removal of facilities also includes after games and special events. Maintain all grounds equipment to ensure proper serviceability and equipment safety.
Minimum Requirements | Must have a high school diploma and minimum of two years of responsible experience directly related to turf maintenance and landscape. Must have thorough knowledge of all phases of landscaping work, fertilizing and pesticide requirements and application, preferably in an athletic environment. Supervisory experience is preferred. A valid SC driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment, as the employee will be required to drive state vehicles to transport equipment and/or personnel. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | Must have SC Pesticide Applications license and Operator license. Understanding of athletic events competition, tournaments and event management preferred. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with facility users, staff, coaches and student athletes. Ability to maintain accurate scheduling and other details of facility usage. Position requires basic computer skills and working knowledge and experience in using e-mail. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) is preferred. Experience in utilizing on-line work order systems is a plus. Skill with electronic devices such as iPhone and iPad is preferred. Must be able to follow oral & written instructions. All employees at the College are expected to perform their jobs in a safe manner in accordance with best safety practices as prescribed by their department, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration training as provided by Facilities Management at the College of Charleston.
Additional Comments Regarding Position | Must be able to work closely with student athletics, college coaches, The Charleston Battery and Mt. Pleasant town officials. Must be able to perform duties as described and work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to work in close quarters, climb ladders/stairs, enter/exit hatches, & work on rooftops. Must be able to work in areas of excessive heat/cold and lift or move furniture, objects, heavy components, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Overtime & call back work is required after normal working hours & on weekends as needed. May be required to be on campus prior to & immediately following all emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, snow/ice storms, etc.

Job Duties
Activity | 1. Manages and maintains the condition of all playing surfaces and practice fields at the Patriots Point Sporting Complex. Responsible for prioritizing and maintaining schedules necessary to keep fields in optimum condition. Ensures the appropriate action is taken by the grounds crew to maintain the fields accordingly and make certain that the schedules are met. Plans and conducts periodic inspections and schedules preventive maintenance of facilities and equipment. Responsible for coordinating and supervising seeding and sodding as needed to maintain fields to appropriate athletic field standards. Supervises the application of fertilizers and pesticides in compliance with SC pesticide applicator’s rules and regulations.

Activity | 2. Evaluates specific needs of each job, places orders for materials, and tracks cost. Determines work order priority and schedules work to be completed. Performs administrative tasks and accesses work orders in AiM via computer, or mobile device, to include ensuring work orders are assigned within 2 business days, work orders are properly scheduled, materials are ordered, received and dispersed in AiM, proper notes are added by staff and proper time and materials are posted. Assistant supervisor will review finished work orders to ensure that work orders have all required information before moving them to completed status. Assistant supervisor will create AiM purchase orders, coordinate with facilities management finance team and verify/approve invoices for completed work.
Supervises the facilities grounds crew, which is responsible for providing grounds maintenance services for the Sporting Complex, Tennis Center, and Sailing Center. Supervises a crew of maintenance/groundskeepers who mow, edge, weed, prune, spray, line fields and fertilize as directed. Properly trains all subordinate personnel in equipment safety and job-related duties. Assists supervisor with enforcing policies, disciplining, hiring, assigning, and directing the work of grounds maintenance staff. Provides input and assists supervisor in the preparation and processing of performance evaluations of permanent employees.

Activity | 3. May be required to inspect work in progress and completed to ensure adherence to instructions and work order specifications in the work order.
Utilizes a computer to access, update, assign and track work orders in the web-based CMMS (AiM) system. Enters pertinent information such as cost and status into AiM to ensure that the shop work order report is current. Communicates via email with Facilities Management and other College personnel as required.
Assistant supervisor will ensure proper progress updates are communicated with the requestor.
Practices, promotes, and enforces OSHA regulations pertaining to trade and hazard communication. Ensures employees adhere to OSHA requirements and proper safety practices by conducting appropriate training meetings, maintaining minutes to document training and attendees, and performing safety audits of employee work practices. Demonstrates safety knowledge by practicing and adhering to all proper safety procedures and OSHA regulations pertaining to the Groundskeeping trade. Consistently wears/uses appropriate personal protective equipment as required. Responsible for ensuring that furniture, floors, walls, & surrounding work area is protected from dust & debris while work is being performed. Also responsible for ensuring that all job sites are thoroughly cleaned when work has been completed.

Assists manager in requesting purchase orders, processing invoices for payment and providing cost/accounting information to personnel monitoring department operating budget. Makes recommendations to reduce cost & maintenance expenditures. Assists manager with coordination of dumpsters, ordering fuel, pest control & other services provided by outside contractors &/or Facilities Management. Assists with the maintenance of daily logs on usage of equipment & required service maintenance on all equipment at all facilities. Utilizes computer to assist supervisor in maintaining records regarding equipment usage and master schedules for usage of all fields.
