Job Title: Urban Youth Academy – Director, Youth Baseball & Softball Programs                                        

Job Summary: The Kansas City Urban Youth Academy (UYA) is a nonprofit organization with the mission to empower Kansas’s City’s urban youth through baseball, softball, academic and social opportunities to be the leaders of tomorrow. The UYA exists to provide a safe, positive environment and surround youth participants with coaches, mentors and role models to help them succeed on and off the field – while growing the games of baseball and softball in the urban community. 

This position is housed at the Urban Youth Academy and is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and coaching staff for UYA baseball and softball programs.  This role is crucial in creating a positive and inclusive environment that nurtures the growth and development of young athletes. The Director will be responsible for implementing training programs, managing and developing the coaching staff, and ensuring the highest standards of coaching and player development. Additionally, the Director will contribute to the strategic planning and vision of the Academy.

Position Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the effective development and implementation of all baseball and softball programs at the UYA including year-long and seasonal programs.
  • Develop and implement a scope and sequence of year-long baseball and softball training program. 
  • Direct and oversee the effective implementation of seasonal baseball and softball programs, camps, clinics etc.  
  • Ensure the integration and execution of the Royals Amateur Development System training model for baseball and softball programming.
  • Recruit, hire, manage, and develop staff members including coaches, coordinators etc., including conducting annual performance reviews for coaches and staff. 
  • Administer and manage baseball and softball programming, including budget management.
  • Identify opportunities to align baseball and softball programming with the Academy’s community and education programming.
  • Contribute to the overall strategic planning and execution for the Academy.
  • Evaluate and select participants for All-Star Commissioner’s Cup, Jennie Finch Classic rosters; and  nominate participants for MLB develops programming. 
  • Provide training to coaches and offer professional growth and mentoring for staff.
  • Create an inviting environment that encourages children and families to sign up and participate in baseball and softball programming. 
  • Evaluate players and assist them with their development for careers on and off the field. 
  • Identify and integrate spplemental tools and resources into the baseball and softball programming including videos, clinics, etc.
  • Create and maintain a positive relationship with MLB & Missouri RBI.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for the partnership between Missouri RBI and the UYA.
  • Identify equipment and maintenance needs and oversee the purchasing of equipment, supplies and uniforms for the baseball and softball programs - ensuing upkeep & equipment protection.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with colleagues across the Community Impact Department and the Club, including baseball/softball managers from the Royals’ Sports Development team.

Position Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 10 years of coaching experience.
  • 5 years of people management experience.
  • 4 years of budget management experience.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills as well as the ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Unquestionable judgement and exhibits the highest level of personal integrity and ethics. 
  • Flexibility and the ability to work non-standard hours, including evenings, weekend and events.
 
Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to lift items weighing as much as 50 pounds 
  • Must be able to be productive utilizing a computer keyboard and telephone
  • Must be able to be productive in a work environment where the noise level can be high at times
  • Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends as required by deadlines and event scheduling

 This role is a Full-Time, Exempt opportunity that is eligible for Company Benefits, 401K, and PTO. This role is expected to have a standard 40-hour work week.
