JOB SUMMARY: The primary responsibility of Texas Rangers Area Scouts is to thoroughly identify and evaluate draft-eligible prospects by competing for the best information in their assigned territory. Rangers Area Scouts build the foundation of each draft prospect including a comprehensive evaluation of their talent, skill and makeup. The Rangers are looking to hire a candidate to become one of area scouts in Southern California.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Identify the best talent in area by establishing track record and initial level of ‘Follow’ interest.
  • Prioritize what players should be targeted from Regional and National level.
  • Document detailed notes on each experience with prospects.
  • Cultivate a network of reliable sources around the player for makeup and background information.             
  • Establish contact and build relationships with players and family (in-home, Zoom, etc.).
  • Gain depth of knowledge on player and player’s family background and makeup.
  • Research detailed info from coaches, teachers, teammates, opponents, etc.
  • Collect video and data on prospects.
  • Scout and track player’s performance & behaviors on and off field.
  • Write comprehensive scouting reports qualifying player’s current abilities and projecting future potential based on: in-person scouting, past experience, video, data, network intel.
  • Share clear and concise notes/reports that accurately summarize your feelings on the player with Regional Supervisor.
  • Create and share a final product that takes your experiences with the player, background research and gathered intel to make an objective evaluation of player’s strength of mindset to play professional baseball.
  • Present clear, objective and compelling representation of player that lead to the best possible draft decision.
  • All other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 2-3 years of experience preferred or proven track record in scouting  
  • Strong passion and demonstrated knowledge for the game of baseball.
  • Process driven.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • A creative mindset, open-mindedness, and desire to work in a learning culture
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff members.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including, but not limited to nights and weekends
  • Ability to travel 70% of the job
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
