SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager of Media and Content, the Sabres.com Staff Writer will produce daily written coverage of the Buffalo Sabres and assist with developing, maintaining, and supporting Sabres.com, Bandits.com and all digital media and marketing objectives. The Sabres.com Staff Writer is part of a support staff for all digital-related activities within the company.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create written content for Sabres.com and Bandits.com, ensuring that all content is timely and relevant.
  • Daily written coverage of team practices, games and press conferences.
  • Travel for coverage of road games and events as needed.
  • Conduct interview with players and coaches for use in written content.
  • Conceptualize written feature stories showcasing player personalities and supporting community initiatives.
  • Assist in operating the club’s content management system on a day-to-day basis by posting content (articles, videos, photos, etc.), editing graphics for the team’s digital properties and in performing general maintenance on the team’s digital properties.
  • Lead in managing coverage of the Buffalo Bandits (NLL) season and other events.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure digital platforms meet objectives.
  • Stay up to date on current trends and best practices.
  • Consistently review the content and services being provided on and provides recommendation that would support our mission.
  • Other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 1 to 3 years of digital, reporting and web management experience
  • Ability to write and create engaging news articles, feature stories and blog posts across digital properties
  • Journalism background with a demonstrated ability to write on deadline a plus
  • Strong familiarity with content management systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of hockey and the NHL, lacrosse and the NLL
  • Experience working in sports is preferred, and the NHL a plus
  • Experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite software
  • Ability to travel internationally
  • Knowledge or interest in mobile and digital trends
  • Ability to read and react quickly to situations and prioritize
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Detail oriented with excellent organization skills
  • Versatility and dependability are paramount
  • Motivated team player
  • Ability to work long, flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Travel required for approximately 30 percent of NHL schedule

COMPENSATION:

This role pays between $38,637 to $53,125 annually. NOTE: Wages will be determined based on factors such as candidate experience, qualifications, skill set and internal equity.
