Job Title: Part-Time Communications Assistant

Department: Communications & Broadcasting

Reports to: Manager, Hockey Communications & Broadcasting

The Top Shelf:

The Communications Assistant will have a significant impact on the outbound communications of the Rockford IceHogs. The selected candidate will support the IceHogs’ content creation, social media coverage, and media relations on game nights. Throughout the week, the role will produce written and video content to introduce the stories of the IceHogs to the Rockford community. The Communications Assistant will work closely with the Hockey Communications & Broadcasting Manager and the Digital Content Coordinator to provide web, social media, and external media coverage for the team. The position will also make team and player information available to fans and media through game notes, player biographies, and other means.

How You’ll Contribute:

  • Produce written content for IceHogs.com such as feature stories, previews, recaps, weekly newsletters, and other releases
  • Provide support for IceHogs social media channels on game nights
  • Assist with the production and distribution of game notes and other hockey communications
  • Work remotely on road games to assist in gameday media coverage such as writing recaps and clipping highlights
  • Prepare media areas with proper materials prior to home games and assist media members
  • Assist in managing the creation and distribution of media credentials prior to home games
  • Maintain relationships with Rockford and Chicago media members
  • Assist with community efforts during the week

Player Stats and Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with sport of hockey is strongly recommended
  • Experience with AP style
  • Strong social media sense and knowledge
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality
  • Interpersonal skills –listens to others, works well in a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills including written and verbal; ability to present ideas clearly and concisely
  • Can prioritize work activities and use time efficiently
  • Adaptability – adapts to change in the work environment, manages competing demands and is able to handle frequent changes
  • Dependability – consistently at work on time, follows instructions, responds to manager’s instructions
  • Creative thinking and the ability to work with a sense of urgency is required
  • Ability to work extended hours around the team game schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays
  • Strong computer skills – including all Microsoft Office software programs, Adobe products, including but not limited to Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and InDesign
  • Ability to address, adapt to, and overcome challenges in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated aptitude for driving results
  • High attention to detail

The Team:

The Rockford IceHogs, founded in 1999 and members of the American Hockey League (AHL), is a premier organization and primary development affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks. Located in Rockford, IL, the Team calls the newly renovated BMO Center its home. 

As the longest running professional sports team in Rockford, the organization has developed a passionate local fan base and has set multiple attendance records over the years, while establishing a strong a community presence.
