Smith Entertainment Group is looking to hire an experienced Director for the new NHL team. The ideal candidate will have 2+ years of experience directing for NHL Broadcasts and expert-level NHL knowledge. This person should be familiar with the challenges in putting on a RSN (Regional Sports Network) hockey broadcast.

We’re looking for a team player, someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and has strong interpersonal skills. This individual will work closely with the Producer and Coordinating Producer to introduce the TV market of Utah to hockey. And that includes teaching camera people the ins and outs of shooting hockey for broadcast. The candidate should expect some level of travel during the NHL season.

SEG Media has built one of the most innovative, forward-thinking broadcast content and distribution strategies in the sports industry that includes linear TV, streaming, and outer market efforts. The candidate will be responsible for helping the team stay ahead of overall trends for both traditional broadcast and streaming efforts.


This position is full-time and based in Salt Lake City, Utah.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as Lead Director for the Utah NHL team for home and away broadcasts (70+ games annually plus first round of playoffs)
  • Assist in interviews and hiring of NHL Utah staff for other key broadcast positions
  • Work with SEG Media SVP of Broadcasting to set the tone for hockey broadcasts, to educate and in some cases introduce the Utah market to professional hockey
  • Work with Crewer to build/maintain preferred crew lists to keep a solid part time crew
  • Work with Producer on game nights to provide the best possible Broadcast every game
  • Collaborate with NHL Utah staff/talent, and members of the hockey operations and PR staff on storylines and content for studio and broadcast features
  • Work with the SEG Media content team, utilizing social media teams to promote the Broadcasts
  • Exemplify the Utah Jazz mission and values: transparency, all in, community obsessed, one team, and scrappy
  • Accept other duties related to Smith Entertainment Group, as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years as director in live sports television, with a good deal of it coming on hockey broadcasts
  • Ideal candidate would have experience leading teams to execute quality NHL Broadcasts
  • Used to working with and dealing with the pressure of live TV broadcasts
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching hockey to new camera people
  • Excellent communication, prioritization, and time management skills
  • Position will be based in Salt Lake City. Preliminarily the role is full-time, but could also be done on a freelance basis depending on the candidate’s preference.
  • Must be knowledgeable and passionate about the NHL.
  • Ability to work a flexible, event-based schedule that will include nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours
  • Ability to travel extensively including weekends and holidays

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This person must be able to communicate and express themselves both written and verbally.
  • This person must be able to observe, inspect, estimate and assess.
  • This person must be able to sit, stand, bend, walk, and climb stairs for long periods of time.
  • This person must be able to lift 20 lbs.
