POSITION SUMMARY:

Seeking a team-oriented Painter who is responsible for maintaining the buildings, grounds, and structures of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which plays host to the World's Largest Single-Day Sporting Event, the Indianapolis 500®. This full-time position will expose you to many different projects throughout the facility and offers an unmatched opportunity to be a part of the execution and operations of our events. You will get to experience and learn what it takes to prepare the track (oval and road course) for each event.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Apply paint to surfaces including cabinets, canvas, ceilings, concrete, doors, floors, grandstands, and walls.
  • Apply paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, and other finishes.
  • Scrape, sand, prime, or seal surfaces prior to painting.
  • Clean walls to ensure proper adherence.
  • Cover surfaces with cloth or plastic to ensure protection.
  • Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
  • Remove fixtures such as doorknobs, fans, lights, pictures, and wall covers prior to painting.
  • Other tasks could include: 
    • Assist in numbering/alphabetizing grandstands and installing/removing signage.
    • Assist in track conversion.
    • Assist in installing/removing temporary walls.
  • Provides support for all events hosted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
  • Other duties as assigned. Due to the unpredictable nature of being a multi-event facility, all employees of the Facilities Department may be required to occasionally help with responsibilities outside of their normal job description.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None

Education

  • High School Graduate or GED required.

Experience/Skills

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in painting.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Heavy Equipment certifications preferred (Boom Lift, Forklift, Scissor Lift, etc.).
  • Must be comfortable working from heights of 30 feet via a (Aerial Platform, Ladders, Lifts, Scaffolding, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge and use of Microsoft Office/Outlook.
  • Innovative thinker and self-starter.
  • Effective communication and people skills. Create and maintain relationships with other skilled trades.
  • Possess adequate knowledge of hazardous materials and OSHA standards (Fall Protection is required) for the profession.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Be open-minded and solution oriented.
  • Punctuality is a must.
  • Commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds and commitment to cultural competency.
  • Ability to uphold and consistently demonstrate the Penske Entertainment Standards.

Travel/Work Hours/Flexibility

  • No travel required. Flexibility is key for this position.
  • Must be able to work overtime; holidays, nights, and weekends are required based on the event schedule and workload.
  • Typical hours for the Facilities Department are Monday through Friday, 7:15am-4:00pm; however, this will vary during the event season.
  • Longer hours and weekends required for the Month of May and other major racing events.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to hear and see (distinguish basic colors and shades) in normal range with or without correction.
  • Ability to bend, carry, climb, hear, kneel, lift (up to 50 pounds), pull, push, reach, sit, squat, stand, talk, walk, and write for long periods of time throughout the day.
  • Must have the stamina to work long hours and must be willing to work an irregular schedule, which may require holidays, nights, and weekends.
  • Frequent use of Aerial Platforms, Ladders, Lifts, and Scaffolding.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently work outdoors, which requires physical stamina to endure the extreme cold, heat, rain, or wind. Work on-site may be dirty, dusty, muddy, and/or noisy. Carpenters may also have to work in confined spaces and at heights. The employee may be exposed to airborne particles, fumes, or hazardous materials. PPE will be required.
