Accounting and Finance: Controller/Director of Finance
Position:
The Controller is part of the Finance Department for Minnesota United FC (MNUFC), a sports business located in the Twins Cities area of Minnesota and a member of Major League Soccer (MLS), the top tier soccer league in North America.
 
This position will report to the Senior Vice President, Finance and work collaboratively across all Club departments.
 
Job Description:
We are seeking a detail oriented and experienced Controller to join our team.  The Controller will oversee all accounting responsibilities for MNUFC. In this position, you will directly manage the accounting, accounts payable and payroll processes to ensure that business is operating effectively, supported by data driven decision making and sound financial and operating controls. This position requires collaboration and cross-functional teamwork across all aspects of the Club.
 
You will be given a unique opportunity to see the wide-ranging impact the Finance department has in supporting the Club. This role is based in Golden Valley, MN with the option to work remote Mondays and Fridays.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Oversight and Management of Accounting Functions
    • Oversee the monthly close process, including review of account reconciliations and timely financial reporting. 
    • Ensure accurate and compliant monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting in line with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). 
    • Manage the Accounts Payable function, ensuring accurate and timely processing of invoices, payments, and vendor reconciliations. 
    • Oversee payroll administration, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and accurate reporting. 
    • Present financial information to executive management in a clear and actionable format. 
    • Drive process improvements across accounting, reporting, and accounts payable functions. 

  • Team Leadership and Collaboration 
    • Lead and mentor the accounting and finance teams, fostering a collaborative, high-performing environment. 
    • Work closely with the Finance Manager to align operational goals with financial strategies, ensuring smooth coordination between departments. 
    • Support staff development through training and performance management, cultivating a strong sense of teamwork and shared accountability.
    • Promote cross-functional collaboration to enhance financial operations and improve company-wide financial acumen.

  • Strategic Financial Leadership 
    • Create and manage systems for financial and operational initiatives as the business grows and evolves. 
    • Collaborate with department leads to align financial goals with overall business objectives. 
    • Implement and manage key operational and financial reporting activities to support business growth. 

  • Financial Policies and Regulatory Compliance 
    • Serve as the subject matter expert on financial and accounting policies, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. 
    • Provide balanced, comprehensive advice on financial policies and procedures. 
    • Manage relationships with external auditors and tax preparers. 
    • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and internal controls that align with the organization's financial goals and executive management directives. 

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related discipline required. CPA designation preferred.
  • 8+ years of financial experience, including day-to-day financial operations at an organization of at least 50 employees
  • Prior management experience required, including demonstrated ability to effectively lead a team of accounting professionals 
  • Experience with QuickBooks preferred
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Public Accounting and/ or previous experience as a Controller preferred
