MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
 
The Academy/Discovery Program Athletic Trainer is responsible for the health and well-being of Portland Timbers academy (MLS NEXT) U-15, Discovery, and Discovery Juniors players. The Academy Staff Athletic Trainer will be held accountable to diagnose, treat, and prevent injuries. 
 
The Academy/Discovery Program Athletic Trainer will collaborate with the medical and performance staff members (MLS NEXT) for all matters related to prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of all Portland Timbers academy players. 
 
This individual will help to conduct soccer specific physical testing, as well as assist the implementation of on-field return to play strategies. The Academy/Discovery Program Athletic Trainer will work collectively with the Academy Performance Specialist to help each athlete achieve age-specific standards of health and physical performance, as determined by the organization. 
 
The Academy/Discovery Program Athletic Trainer will report directly to the Head Academy Athletic Trainer.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 
GENERIC DUTIES
  • Understand and remain committed to the Timbers mission, vision, core values, key relationships, and overall goals. 
  • Comply with all Portland Timbers FC medical policies, protocols, and game operations manuals
  • Instruct, motivate, and assist athletes to achieve individual and team goals 
  • Work with and support other PTFC team members, as required, ensuring effective and efficient service is developed and delivered
  • Meticulous record keeping in electronic medical record systems (EMR)
    • Includes accurate injury reporting, all treatments provided, response to treatments and progression (plan of care).
 
SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Attend all MLS NEXT (U-15), Discovery, and Discovery Juniors training sessions and matches, including travel
  • Alignment with PTFC first team in the approach to athlete evaluation, treatment, assessments, performance rehabilitation programming, and return to play standards
  • Regular meetings with the members of the Timbers Academy Staff to discuss player status (i.e. injuries, treatments, and return to play protocols) 
  • Manage Portland Timbers FC Academy U-15, Discovery, and Discovery Juniors player injury status through daily record keeping, coaches reports, and direct communication with all stakeholders included but not limited to the Academy Coaches, Director of Sports Medicine, Head Academy Athletic Trainer, and player parents or guardians
  • Coordinate and record all medical appointments related to injuries that occur during MLS NEXT (U-15), Discovery, and Discovery Juniors training and matches. 
  • Performs athlete tests, measurements, and evaluations to aid in player profiling and then program injury prevention, and/or training programs as indicated 
  • Actively collaborate with PTFC medical and performance staff on rehabilitation programs for injured players
  • Game Day Requirements
    • Pre-game treatments 
    • Lead on field assessments of players
    • Communicate any necessary updates to coaching staff and Head Academy Athletic Trainer
  • Assist Head Academy Athletic Trainer in the completion of organizational paperwork
    • Entrance and Exit Physicals
    • Liability-protecting waivers for all players, trialists, tryouts, etc.
  • Assist Head Academy Athletic Trainer in maintaining medical budget (i.e. purchase supplies, equipment, consulting services)
  • Support Academy Head Athletic Trainer with the other academy teams when requested
  • May be called upon to fill in for an absence of other athletic trainers within our sports medical team.
 
REQUIRED SKILLS, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION 
  • NATABOC (or CATA) Certified Athletic Trainer
  • In good standing with NATABOC and a member of the NATA (or CATA)
  • Oregon state licensure (or ability to gain licensure in OR)
  • Current professional CPR certification
  • Possess personal professional liability insurance
  • Display superb organizational skills
  • Strong work ethic and driven by wanting to become the best in their field
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • ·Minimum four (4) year college/university Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or Health-Related Field
  • Master’s Degree in related health care field preferred
  • Minimum three (3) years certified athletic trainer experience in a sports environment, preferably with soccer
 
PERFERRED AND DEVELOPED SKILLS
  • Dual Credentials - Athletic Training (AT) and Physical Therapy (DPT)
  • Functional Movement Systems certifications (FMS, FCS, SFMA, YBT)
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) 
  • XPS Certification
  • Experience with sports science technologies, GPS platforms (Catapult, Stat Sport, etc), jump testing (ForceDecks, Sparta), strength testing (ForceFrame, KangaTech), etc
 
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
This position is considered exempt from minimum wage and overtime pay requirements.
