ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Portland Timbers Assistant Discovery Program Manager is responsible for coaching and program administration within the Discovery Program. The Discovery program serves local youth players aged from U9 up to U14. The goal of the Discovery program (pre-Academy) is to develop and identify players who are top prospects to advance through the Portland Timbers player pathway. 
 
In coordination with the Discovery Program Manager this role will assist with designing training sessions, program communications, implementing training sessions, and managing regional coaching staff
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
GENERIC DUTIES
  • Work closely, constructively, and collaboratively with the team’s coaching staff, trainers and support    staff.
  • Help create optimal conditions for player development and performance.
  • Be innovative and creative.
  • Identify areas for program improvements.
  • Keep up with latest technology in computing, communications, sports science and sports analysis.
 
SPECIFIC DUTIES
On-Field Coaching
  • Lead and Assist (coaching) within the Discovery Program: Discovery Juniors (U9, U10, U11 & U12) and Discovery Seniors (U13 & U14) in all training sessions, festivals, exhibitions, tournament, and other games/events when requested.
  • Design individual training regimens for the Discovery Program players including goalkeepers within the training framework.
  • Set up training areas arranging for, conduction, assisting and supervising practices, training camps and training sessions for the Discovery Programs.
 
Off-Field Development
  • Assist with off-season player evaluations and individual development programs.
  • Monitor, mentor and assess coaching staff within the Discovery juniors.
  • Manage player registration software
  • Live the Timbers Club values – don’t just talk about them – set an example for the players.
  • Develop players that can contribute to both the Academy and the Discovery Programs 
  • Assist the coaches on resolving any conflicts quickly and appropriately.
  • Assist in maintaining a video library and training session library 
  • Discovery program communications: coaches, players & parents
  • Assist with all Discovery tournament planning, registration and set up: prior, during, and after the events 
  • Collaborate in the continued progression of Discovery curriculum and principles.
  • Develop and maintain good standing relationships with local youth Clubs and Alliance Clubs
 
Recruiting/Scouting
  • Assist in the scouting and evaluation of potential players into the Discovery program.
 
Other duties will be assigned as needed.
 
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIRMENTS:
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational abilities to manage multiple programs and priorities, including event planning, player welfare concerns, and academy administrative needs as assigned.
  • Experience managing and leading a team
  • Experience and understanding of the Oregon soccer landscape including players, Clubs and pathways
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) helpful but not required
  • USSF “B” Coaching License or better required
  • Minimum 8 years of coaching experience
  • Be innovative and creative – help create the future by being self-motivated with the ability to think independently and with flexibility.
  • Develop a vocabulary and culture of key similarities that all coaches in the team use consistently to reinforce your methods so that players understand and respect that a strong professional relationship exists in the coaching group.
  • Coach using the 8 “Cs” of coaching - composure, clarity, communication, certainty, confidence, compassion, creativity and calmness.
  • Experience in working with both GK’s and outfield players.
  • Candidate must be comfortable and available to work on evenings and weekends.
